I believe when you walk into someone’s home, it says so much about them, clutter or not! When I see certain items that people display, it shows where their heart is. It might represent family, friends, animals, reading, music, food and wine, sports, and I can go on and on. How about you? When you are in your friend’s homes, do you look at their books to know more about your friends? Books say so much. How about their music?
When friends and family come into my home, they always see pictures of family and friends (although now I have to put the many pictures on a digital photo frame since my place is small) because that’s what my life is about. I also have small items such as ‘Willow’ wooden figurines with sweet remarks from friends. I have my mother’s old perfume bottles and perfume bottles given to me by my son when he was young. I have African curio’s given to me by my sweet sister, Ferne, before she died. I have artwork from my grandchildren and twin pictures and books (since I am blessed to have a twin, Connie). I think you get what I am saying. These ‘things’ surround me and everyday I am surrounded by love with all my momento’s. I will always want my great memories with me.
But, I came to a time when I was ‘downsizing’ that I had to get rid of some things that were hard to part with. At that time, I had to decide what to dispose of. I saved cards, cards, cards - always thinking that I would use them somehow, some way. But, in one of my moves, my son looked at me, and said, ‘What is that box all about?’ And I had to confess that it was cards.Even my baby cards that my mother saved for me! I think you know what happened next. I had about ten minutes to sort through them and pull about 20 cards and throw the rest in the garbage.
As you are reading this, what pops into your mind of what to dispose? Kitchen stuff, books, magazines, china, glasses, pictures, etc. etc. Don’t wait until you are moving. Start today. Pick one group such as framed pictures. Remove them from frames and put in photo boxes or discard. That’s what your kids are going to do once you die, so you can help them out by doing it now.
As you downsize, don’t remove your personality from your home. Just remove some extra stuff that you don’t need anymore!
Let me know if I can help you downsize and rid yourself of way too many things!
